The LABORA project was created to encourage students in the region to more easily find jobs in their area. It is an initiative of the Chomutov District Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the border region of Saxony in Germany. Their mutual cooperation resulted in workshops, excursions and job offers that needed to be advertised and published in a friendly manner. This enables students and graduates to deepen the connection between learning and practice and thus to find a place on the labour market more easily. Hence, the Chamber approached us with its requirements to implement such a portal.
Simply put, there was a need to implement a portal similar to Jobs, but on a more modest scale in terms of commercialisation. The portal had to allow for registration of both companies and students, approval processes from the perspective of administrators, or perhaps secure sharing of contacts between student and company. Clearly, it was necessary to design a public part and a comprehensive administration part of the site, which was the biggest challenge.
Along with the design, we gradually worked with the Chamber to hone a trusted brand that would work well with the target groups and also fit in with the already launched German portal.
The portal can therefore be divided into public, student, corporate and administrator views. Different views are opened for each user to view and manage content. The public part of the site allows you to view job postings and view events. The homepage is dominated by the portal's smart search engine as well as a classifieds filter. Students can respond to job postings, and the logged-in company is notified of this in its overview of the job postings created. Everything is subject to oversight by the portal administrators to ensure that inappropriate content and users do not enter the site. Everything has been made as modular as possible from a backend perspective, so that the portal can be developed with new functionalities that might prove desirable over time.
We have thus managed to create a unique place for students and local companies, which I am convinced will help them to deepen the interaction between studies and the labour market, all with the great support of the entire Erzgebirge region, including the German side.
The whole project was both a technical and design challenge for us, as we had to reconcile a large number of requirements and accommodate different role approaches. We are happy to have been able to design and develop Labora and help create new opportunities in close cooperation with the District Chamber of Commerce Chomutov.
